Simpson Dispute Resolution started as a boutique in Germany dedicated to providing "Tribunal Secretary" services to arbitral tribunals in complex cases. The idea had a market: many senior professionals leave their large firms or professorships only to discover that, once a case arrives, there is no staff to support the case! Dr. Simpson provided - and continues to provide -
Now, Dr. Katherine Simpson, FCIArb., is an arbitrator and mediator. She has been involved in over 30 international arbitrations chaired by Profs. Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel, William W. (Rusty) Park, and Klaus Peter Berger, among others. Her experience includes international investment and commercial arbitrations valued at USD 5 million – USD 2.5 billion. Several of these matters have since become the most influential cases of the past decade, including Bear Creek v. Peru (ICSID 14/21) (elaborating the need for a “social license” to conduct business), and UP v. Hungary (ICSID 13/35) (Global Arbitration Review’s “Most Important Award” of 2019, regarding the Achmea Decision’s impact on ICSID jurisdiction).
Dr. Simpson is on the AAA-ICDR international panel and has served in 7 investor-state arbitrations. Her case experience includes matters related to commercial, life sciences, telecommunication, construction, energy, mining, oil & gas, human rights, and financial disputes, as well as disputes related to joint ventures.
Dr. Simpson is familiar with the needs of cases involving state and private parties. She been involved in cases conducted under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (“ICC”), London Court of International Arbitration (“LCIA”), Dubai International Arbitration Centre (“DIAC”), the German Institution of Arbitration (“DIS”), and the Chinese European Arbitration Centre (“CEAC”). Dr. Simpson has served in ad hoc arbitrations using the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (“UNCITRAL”) Rules (2010) and in investor-state arbitrations before the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (“SCC”) and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (“ICSID”).
