In this episode of The Neutral Voice, we explore why conflicts so often escalate instead of resolving, even when parties genuinely want an outcome.
Our guest, Sandra Hitchcock, is a mediator and relationship practitioner with long-standing experience working with couples, families, groups, and organisations. Practising as a mediator since 2007, her work focuses on understanding conflict dynamics, communication breakdowns, and the human factors that shape dispute outcomes.
Drawing from inside-the-room experience, the conversation examines recurring patterns that cause disputes to harden, the role communication plays in escalation and de-escalation, and how neutrality can begin to influence the direction of a dispute once it enters a formal setting.
We also reflect on what it takes to hold neutrality when emotions are strong or power imbalances are present, and the early warning signs parties often overlook before conflicts intensify.
The Neutral Voice is a podcast initiative of The-Neutrals.ORG™, a global platform dedicated to advancing neutrality, professional integrity, and prevention-first dispute resolution across jurisdictions and sectors.
This is an informal, experience-led conversation grounded in professional reflection. No specific cases are discussed. The focus is on insight, judgment, and the lived realities of conflict practice.

Drawing from real-world infrastructure, commercial, and institutional contexts, the discussion reflects on why delays harden problems, how neutrality enables earlier and better decisions, and what leaders risk losing when tensions are allowed to simmer unnoticed.

Neutrality in mediation is often described as a principle. In international practice, it is a continuous professional discipline.
In Episode 3 of The Neutral Voice, international mediator Corrado Mora reflects on how neutrality is exercised in cross-border and multi-party disputes, and what international experience reveals about professional judgement in complex settings.
Drawing from global practice, this conversation explores how neutrality is shaped by perception, cultural context, and ongoing decision-making. Rather than a fixed position, neutrality emerges through everyday choices - how the mediator listens, intervenes, structures the process, and manages cultural and relational dynamics.
The discussion covers:
• Formal vs lived neutrality in mediation
• Why neutrality means being equi-close, not equidistant
• Cultural differences in negotiation, emotion, and decision-making
• Moments when neutrality is most tested
• The gap between mediation training and real practice
• Neutrality as an evolving professional responsibility
This episode is relevant for mediators, arbitrators, lawyers, ADR practitioners, and professionals working in international or cross-cultural dispute resolution.

Neutrality in mediation is often understood as impartiality. In practice, it requires emotional awareness, restraint, and the ability to manage tension without becoming part of it.
In Episode 4 of The Neutral Voice, Lady Justice Jacqueline N. Kamau, Judge of the High Court of Kenya, reflects on how Neutrals handle emotional intensity in mediation and decision-making environments where stakes are high.
Drawing from judicial and mediation experience, this conversation explores how neutrality is sustained through observation, calm presence, and process control. Rather than suppressing emotion, the Neutral’s role is to recognize it early, allow space for expression, and maintain balance without taking sides.
The discussion covers:
• Early verbal and non-verbal signs of emotional escalation
• Maintaining calm presence and restraint under pressure
• The difference between empathy and sympathy
• The role of silence in de-escalation
• Allowing parties to ventilate while maintaining respect and structure
• Why timing, firmness, and process leadership matter
• What parties remember when emotion is handled well
• When mediation is appropriate and when court intervention is necessary
• The importance of training in professional neutrality
This episode is relevant for mediators, arbitrators, judges, lawyers, ADR practitioners, and professionals working in emotionally charged or high-stakes dispute resolution settings.
